Independent asset manager (IAM)
An independent asset manager (IAM) is a portfolio manager that does not belong to a banking group. Under FinIA it must be licensed by FINMA and is supervised by a supervisory organisation.
The IAM does not hold client assets itself: they stay in an account in the client's name at a custodian bank, and the manager usually receives a power of attorney limited to management. The client can choose the bank and change manager without moving the assets.
