Performance fee

A performance fee is charged on the part of the return above an agreed threshold. The contract sets the calculation basis, the period and often a high-water mark: the fee is only due when the portfolio value exceeds its previous peak, so the same rise is not paid for twice. It usually comes on top of the assets-based fee.
